Apprenticeships the key to buildings future

March 19th, 2010 No comments

hardThe future of the construction sector can be shored up by increasing the number of apprenticeship schemes available to young people in the UK, an expert has suggested.

Building firm Kier recently revealed that it is in the process of providing employment opportunities and experience to two friends in Harrow – Rowan Streete, aged 25 and 16-year-old Dwayne Carbon.

As part of an agreement between the company – which also specialises in civil engineering, opencast mining and facilities management – and Harrow Council, the pair will undertake a three-year apprenticeship scheme in plumbing, heating and ventilation.

Kier framework manager Richard Weller commented that such prospects can have a big impact on the industry as a whole.

“Apprenticeships like these can make a vital contribution to the future of our construction industry, which urgently needs to plug a looming skills gap that has been deepened by the recession,” he said.
