CIOB begins search for construction’s next BIG idea

June 3rd, 2011

logo_ciobAre you a budding Thomas Cubitt with an innovative approach to construction or have an idea that’s burning a hole in your mind? If so, then the Chartered Institute of Building urges you to take part in its International Innovation and Research Awards.

For more than a decade these CIOB awards have played an important role in bringing together practitioners with education and training providers as well as policy makers. This interaction develops news ideas and methods across the industry.

“The industry is at a watershed moment where technology and the traditional ways of working are combining together. Backing the right idea and finding the right balance will be crucial for success. Recessions often bring with them new ideas and innovative practices as companies search for greater efficiency, and we are hoping to see the cream of these in our awards this year”, said Laura Warne, CIOB Innovation & Research Manager.

There are seven award categories to choose from these are:-

  • Undergraduate Dissertation Award
  • Masters Dissertation Award
  • Sustainable Innovation Award
  • Innovation Research Paper Award
  • Architecture & Surveying Innovation Award
  • Innovation & Technology Development Prize
  • Innovation Achievers Award

Earlier this year the Institute launched an online research and funding database that connects the industry with funding opportunities across Europe. The CIOB estimates that UK construction alone can currently access over £500 million worth of funding.

“Construction is an innovative process but we suspect that many don’t know the level of funding that is available which could support and develop their work. The CIOB has always promoted the need for innovation and research and the mix of ideas between industry and academia. For those who enter our awards it could be the start of bringing that idea to life,” added Laura.

Entry for this year’s competition closes on 1 July 2011. Winners will be announced on 4 October at BRE’s Insite11 Exhibition.
