Rainlight Studio wins competition to design significant elements for the public realm of the Qatari city of Lusail, marking a new era of urban art for the 21st century

Qatar/London 18 October 2021; Rainlight Studio has been appointed by Elan Media, after a competitive bid, to design the digital out of home advertising assets, including gateway totems and boulevard totems in the city of Lusail, Qatar.

These elements are a central part of the planned city Lusail’s public realm, set to be unveiled in March next year and one of the proposed venues for the 2022 Qatar World Cup.  This dynamic development, located on the coast, north of Doha, will eventually have 450,000 people who will be able to enjoy amenities including marinas, commercial districts and luxury shopping.

Explains Rainlight Studio creative principal Yorgo Lykouria, “Unity is a universal theme for our times and the emblem of this heroic cantilevered media sculpture. The artefacts we create for the urban environment are conceived to evoke wonder and beauty. These media sculptures represent an optimistic view towards the future of our cities.”

The boulevard totems meanwhile have a painted steel column and an OLED curved frameless screen with a lit coloured beacon at the top and the gateway totem design measures 17.4 metres high and 7.4 metres tall, with space for a large-scale image at the top.  The site will start to be prepared in September this year with a proposed completion date of March 2022.
