Compression pipe fittings work on copper and chrome-plated copper pipe, and they are the fitting of choice for connections that may need to be accessed or undone at a later date. Under sinks, at isolation valves, on boiler and appliance connections, in airing cupboards – these are all places where compression is the right call, because the joint can be remade without specialist tools. They take longer to install than push-fit, and you need enough clearance around the fitting to turn a spanner. What Are Push-fit Fittings and When Do You Use Them?

Push-fit fittings connect pipe by inserting it into the fitting body until it clicks into place. No tools needed for the joint itself – which is the point. Push-fit joints need to remain reachable for inspection. Speed is the most obvious difference. Push-fit joints take seconds; compression takes longer and requires a spanner at every connection. On a single isolation valve connection, that barely matters. On a full first fix across two floors and fifteen or twenty joints, it adds up to a meaningful difference in labour time.

In accessible locations, both types perform reliably when correctly installed. The difference shows when you need to service, move or inspect a connection. A compression fitting can be re-tightened if it develops a slight weep, or completely undone and refitted with a new olive. A push-fit joint releases with a specific collar tool, which makes them slightly less convenient for quick access and adjustment.

For any pipework that will be permanently concealed – inside finished walls, under screed, above a ceiling – compression is the lower-risk choice. For visible, accessible runs where speed and flexibility matter more, push-fit is the practical option.

Can You Mix Both in the Same System?

Yes – and most domestic plumbing systems do. It’s common practice to use push-fit throughout first fix for speed, then switch to compression fittings at second fix for appliance connections, isolation valves and any point of likely future access. The only technical requirement is that the pipe material is compatible with whatever fitting you’re using; push-fit fittings specify compatible pipe types on the packaging. Beyond that, mixing compression and push-fit on the same job is normal, not unusual, and most experienced plumbers move between the two without giving it a second thought.
