High visibility jackets are a familiar part of construction workwear, particularly during the colder and darker months. But choosing the right jacket for a site team involves more than deciding whether it should be yellow or orange.
The working environment, visibility class, weather exposure, garment fit and the way the jacket will be worn with other clothing can all affect whether it is suitable for the job. For employers and site managers, the starting point should therefore be the work being carried out rather than the appearance of the garment.
Start With the Risk and the Working Environment
Not every construction role creates the same visibility requirements. A worker operating in a busy yard alongside moving plant faces a different environment from somebody working primarily inside a building. A traffic management operative working beside a road will have different requirements again.
Before selecting high visibility clothing, employers should consider factors such as:
- proximity to moving vehicles or plant
- lighting conditions and whether work continues after dark
- weather exposure and temperature
- the level of physical activity involved
- other PPE worn at the same time
- client or site-specific requirements
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidance on personal protective equipment at work reinforces the need to select PPE for the risks involved and the conditions in which it will be used. The same guidance identifies construction sites as an example of where high-visibility clothing is used.
Understand What EN ISO 20471 Means
For professional high visibility clothing, EN ISO 20471 is the standard buyers are most likely to encounter. High visibility garments use fluorescent background material together with retroreflective material to make the wearer easier to see in daylight and when illuminated in darker conditions.
HSE guidance describes three classes of high-visibility clothing, with different minimum areas for the background and retroreflective material. The important point for buyers is that the individual garment specification matters.
Two jackets that look similar may carry different classifications. Employers should therefore check the certification of the exact product being ordered rather than assuming that every hi-vis jacket provides the same level of visibility.
Colour Alone Does Not Determine Suitability
Yellow and orange are the two colours most commonly associated with high visibility workwear, but colour on its own does not establish whether a garment is appropriate for a particular site.
This is particularly important where additional industry requirements apply. For example, an orange jacket should not automatically be assumed to be suitable for rail work simply because it is orange. Rail environments can require garments meeting the rail-specific requirements set out in RIS-3279-TOM. The same principle applies more broadly: choose the garment according to the relevant standard and site requirement, not simply by colour.
Match the Jacket Style to the Job
There is no single jacket design that works best for every construction role.
Different types of hi vis jackets are suited to different environments and ways of working. A bomber jacket normally has a shorter cut and can be useful for drivers, machine operators and workers who need good freedom of movement. Traffic jackets generally offer greater body coverage and are commonly chosen for exposed outdoor or roadside work. Softshell jackets can provide a lighter and more flexible option for active roles or milder conditions. Two-tone jackets combine fluorescent material with darker contrast panels, which can help disguise everyday dirt and marks in demanding working environments.
The style name is useful, but it should never replace checking the actual garment specification.
Waterproof and Water-Resistant Are Not the Same Thing
Autumn and winter construction work often means exposure to rain, so weather performance deserves particular attention. Not every high visibility jacket provides the same level of protection. Some garments are designed specifically for wet weather, while others offer more limited water resistance.
For teams spending long periods outdoors, buyers should check the manufacturer’s stated performance rather than relying on broad descriptions alone. Other details can also affect how practical a jacket is in poor weather, including taped seams, storm flaps, hood design, adjustable cuffs, garment length and breathability.
Think About Layering Rather Than Just Buying the Warmest Jacket
A heavily insulated jacket is not necessarily the best solution for every construction worker. Many construction roles involve considerable physical activity. A garment that feels comfortable at the start of a cold morning can become excessively warm once the wearer begins lifting, climbing or carrying materials.
Layering often provides more flexibility. A typical system might include a base layer or work T-shirt, a sweatshirt or fleece, and then a high visibility outer layer. Workers can then adjust their clothing as temperatures and activity levels change.
This should also be considered when choosing jacket sizes. A jacket that fits perfectly over a T-shirt may become restrictive once a sweatshirt or fleece is worn underneath.
Fit and Movement Matter
Construction work rarely involves standing still. Workers may need to drive, climb, bend, lift materials, operate equipment and work in confined spaces. A jacket should therefore allow sufficient movement without becoming excessively loose.
Areas worth checking include shoulder movement, sleeve length, cuffs, jacket length, fastening and compatibility with other PPE. HSE guidance also warns against loose protective clothing near moving machinery because of the risk of it becoming caught.
For employers supplying a workforce, it is therefore important to offer an appropriate size range rather than trying to fit everyone into a limited number of standard sizes.
Branding Needs More Thought on High Visibility Clothing
Adding a company logo to workwear can help identify employees and contractors while giving a team a consistent professional appearance. However, high visibility garments need more thought than an ordinary polo shirt or sweatshirt.
A logo should not interfere with reflective tape, and branding should be positioned with the construction of the garment in mind. The most suitable branding method may also vary. Printing can work well for detailed or larger designs, while embroidery can provide a stitched finish where the garment is suitable for it.
For that reason, businesses should consider branding when selecting the jacket rather than choosing the garment first and treating logo placement as an afterthought.
Check the Exact Garment Specification
One of the easiest procurement mistakes is assuming that all products within a category have the same features. Two apparently similar jackets can differ significantly in visibility class, waterproof performance, insulation, lining, hood construction, pockets, reflective tape layout and additional standards.
If a site or principal contractor requires a particular specification, buyers should confirm that requirement against the exact product being supplied. A product name or colour should never be treated as a substitute for the technical specification.
A Practical Checklist Before Ordering
Before ordering high visibility jackets for a construction team, it is worth asking:
- What does the risk assessment require?
- What visibility class is needed?
- Are there any client or site-specific requirements?
- Will workers be operating around vehicles or plant?
- Will the garment be used in prolonged rain?
- How much insulation is actually needed?
- What layers will normally be worn underneath?
- Does the jacket allow enough movement?
- Is the correct size range available?
- Does the individual garment carry the required certification?
- Will logos or employee identification be added?
- Can branding be positioned appropriately around the reflective areas?
Answering those questions before purchasing can save businesses from ending up with garments that look suitable but do not properly match the way their teams actually work.

Choosing high visibility jackets for construction should begin with the environment, the worker and the task. Colour is important, but it is only one part of the decision.
Visibility class, weather performance, insulation, fit, freedom of movement and branding all deserve consideration. Taking the time to compare the specification of the individual garment rather than simply buying the first yellow or orange jacket available gives employers a much better chance of supplying workwear that is appropriate for the conditions in which it will actually be used.
