Charred timber cladding turns up on more UK planning submissions every year, usually described as shou sugi ban or yakisugi. It photographs well, which is part of why it spreads. What follows is the less photogenic side: what the material actually is, what varies between products, and what to confirm before it reaches a specification.
Start With the Regulatory Position
In the UK, whether combustible cladding can be used at all is determined by the building, not the material. Restrictions on combustible materials in external walls apply to relevant buildings above defined heights, and the applicable use classes and thresholds have changed more than once in recent years.
Timber cladding remains widely used on housing and low-rise work, but the decision sits with Approved Document B and the specifics of the project. Confirm the position with the building control body or fire engineer for the actual building before the material gets written into a spec. Treat any supplier claim about fire performance as something to be evidenced by test data for that product, in that build-up, not accepted on description.
That check comes first, because everything below is irrelevant if the material cannot be used on the building in question.
What the Process Does to the Board
The technique burns the face of the timber so the outer layer converts to carbon. That carbon layer is a surface condition. It is not a treatment that soaks through the section, and it does not change the timber underneath.
The traditional purpose was to make the surface less appealing to weather, insects and decay, and uncoated deep-char boards have a long service history in Japan. But the useful mental model for a UK contractor is a durable surface layer on an otherwise ordinary timber board, not a fundamentally different material.
Species is the Variable That Matters Most
The process was developed around Japanese cedar, sugi. That species has a pronounced difference in density between its early and late growth, so the softer bands burn back faster and leave the characteristic raised, crackled texture.
Char a dense hardwood and you get a flatter, more uniform blackened surface. It can look good, but it is a different product with different movement and different maintenance behaviour. There are also composite and printed boards on the market imitating the appearance with no charring involved at all.
None of these are inherently wrong choices. The problem is when they are compared on price as though they were equivalent. Authentic Japanese charred timber cladding should be identified by species and origin, and a supplier who will not state both plainly is telling you something.
Handling and Fixing on Site
The charred face is the product. Anything that abrades it during handling, storage or installation is removing what the client is paying for.
Boards want to be handled on edge rather than dragged, stored flat and covered, and cut with the face supported. Deep-char finishes mark most easily, and brushed finishes are more forgiving. Expect some carbon transfer onto gloves, scaffold boards and anything else in contact, particularly on uncoated deep char in the first weeks.
Fixing method should be settled before ordering, because it drives the profile. Face fixing is quicker and cheaper but leaves visible fasteners in a surface where they are conspicuous. Secret fix systems keep the face clean but require a compatible profile and a more disciplined setting out. Whichever route, use fixings rated for the exposure and, where relevant, for compatibility with the timber, and follow the supplier’s ventilation and cavity guidance rather than improvising.
Maintenance, and Setting the Client’s Expectation
Uncoated deep-char boards are generally left alone. The carbon layer erodes gradually under rain and UV and the elevation softens toward grey over years, unevenly, because exposure is uneven. Clients who want that are usually delighted. Clients who were not told will call it a defect.
Brushed and coated finishes hold their appearance longer but need periodic re-oiling, typically measured in years rather than months, and the interval depends on exposure and orientation more than on any figure in a brochure.
The single most useful thing to establish at specification stage is not how long the cladding lasts. It is what the building will look like in five years, and whether anyone is committed to doing anything to it in the meantime. Get that agreed in writing with the client, ideally alongside a weathered sample rather than a fresh one, and most of the disputes this material generates simply do not arise.
